Six Things To Ask Your Roofing Contractor

If you plan on having your roof repaired or replaced by a professional roofer, it’s essential to do your research. Before you hire a roofing contractor, there are some crucial questions you should ask.

1. “Are You Licensed?”

This is a crucial question to ask your roofing contractor.

Ask the roofing contractor if your city or state licenses them.  Licensing requirements can vary by state. Most states and municipalities require a contractor to be licensed. Verify if a license is required in your area. If the license is necessary, check with local offices to ensure your contractor’s license is up to date and absent of violations.

2. “Do You Have Insurance?”

Another vital question to ask is if your potential roofer has insurance. You’ll want to make sure that the roofing contractor has commercial liability insurance. This covers against bodily injury and property damage sufficient to cover work-related damages.

The contractor should provide workers compensation coverage for job-related injuries and health risks.

3. “Will You Handle Permitting?”

While city ordinances and regulations can vary across the country, permits are usually involved in residential and commercial work. The good thing is, most contractors will take care of this for you, but always ask before assuming.

4. “What Is The Warranty On My New Roof?”

It would help if you asked your roofing contractor how long the work is guaranteed. Manufacturers usually cover materials while the roofers cover their work. Just know that these are two separate warranties. Be sure to ask your roofer what is covered under each warranty and the length of each.

5. “How Long Will the Project Last?”

Depending on the crew’s size and talent, roofers can make several full-scale roof repairs in a single day. Don’t just presume, however, that it’ll go quick. Ask the roofer how long it would take them to clean up from the moment they come out. Don’t let a project that lasts too long surprise you.

6. “Do you use Roofing Subcontractors?”

In order to conduct the job properly, either subcontractors or workers could be well trained to do it. It’s important to know, however, whether the installers are listed as workers or subcontractors. Depending on your state’s laws, you will need to make sure that any subcontractors are also covered to cover yourself.
